Situated in Franklin in the North Island of New Zealand
on the beautiful Awhitu Peninsula
Kauri Vista Poultry is home to old-fashioned heritage poultry breeds from England. The vast majority of Heritage Poultry are named after the place or town of origin of that particular fowl, such as the Orpington, Dorking, Sussex, and Cornish to name a few. Heritage Breeds are those with long histories and are purebred which means they breed true. They have a slow rate of growth, which allows development of a strong skeletal structure and healthy organs prior to building body mass. The advantage of old- fashioned breeds is their hardiness and longevity, often living beyond ten years and laying for much of that time.
At Kauri Vista Poultry I am striving to ensure the continuity of some of the old- fashioned breeds from Great Britain through good breeding practices, and am adding to my collection yearly. Through selective breeding of my purebred bloodlines, I am developing utility breeds of optimum performance, beauty, temperament, health and vigour, while trying to maintain their dual-purpose qualities.
In New Zealand, there is a limited variety of these old-fashioned breeds and with such strict government regulations to safeguard our borders from biological risk, it is impossible to import new stocks from overseas. It is therefore crucial to protect and preserve these Heritage Breeds we do have, for future generations to benefit from and enjoy. I am endeavouring to bring back into our gardens and farmyards some of these reliable old breeds from England that I first knew at my grandfather’s home in Yorkshire when I was a boy.
I hope that your visit to this site will provide you with some helpful information.
